  • Having lived 95% of my life in NH, I wanted to research the proud history of the Granite State's cities and attempt to create designs in harmony with it.

  • To the best of my knowledge, none of NH's 13 cities (except for Concord) have city flags.

  • Flags are an excellent way to show cities' pride and represent their history and culture in a visually simplistic way that city seals cannot when viewed from afar.  Many of my designs are, however, based on elements from cities' wonderful seals.

  • This is all done in good fun and respect for NH history.  I have no plans to pursue any of these designs officially after the poor results of the Laconia & Manchester flag contests in 2016-17.

  • Chances are that if you're visiting this page you already know a thing or two about flag design, but here are the five simple rules.  I haven't followed them to a T in my designs, but hopefully I've come close!

  • For more reasons why, from a design standpoint, city flags typically fail, please visit this (ubiquitous in vexillology circles) 2015 TED Talk by Roman Mars.

  • Perhaps the most common misconception about city flags are that they are an attempt to replace a city's seal.  I cannot stress enough that this is not the case! Flags and seals can not only coexist peacefully, but complement each other! Think of the logo for your favorite sports team.  What fun would uniform & helmet designs be if the full team name needed to be written out longhand every single time?!  Furthermore, well-designed flags provide cities valuable marketing tools!

  • But what about New Hampshire's towns?  As you may have noticed from the population figures above, NH's 13 cities are not even close to being the 13 largest municipalities.  In fact Derry, with over 33,000 people, would rank fourth, but is still a town!

  • I hope to create designs for some of these towns in the near future - hopefully towns in parts of the state that aren't covered: Littleton, Plymouth, Conway, Wolfeboro, and Peterborough come to mind.  As you can see from the above map, the vast majority of NH's cities are "down south".
